Sweatshop Union’s “Bill Murray EP” wins Outstanding Hiphop Recording of the Year at 2011 WCMA’s!
// October 26th, 2011 // No Comments » // Uncategorized
It is very exciting to wake up to find out a project you engineered, mixed and even produced on was deemed an “outstanding rap/hiphop recording” by an accredited organization. The record was very well received with fans, media and the critics, but there is something very tangible about an actual trophy.
Working with Sweatshop Union is always incredible. I challenge anyone who writes off all hip-hop as unmusical & close minded to have even a quick skim through their catalog. The album was recorded and mixed at Creativ Recording studios, and features production from within the group, as well as guest producers like my self, Dave Knill and Stuey Kubrick.
Even after the many hours of studio work put in to crafting the record, I still enjoy listening through the record as if it was a first listen – it’s that flavorful. There are talks of a new Sweatshop Union record getting started soon.

Terell Safadi – Champagne Dreams
// July 9th, 2011 // No Comments » // Uncategorized
Vancouver artist/skateboarder Terell Safadi just released his first studio album on July 2nd, 2011. I had the pleasure of engineering the record here at Creativ, and even sneaking a beat on the project. Terell’s music is upbeat and hard hitting, lacking a saturation of the cliches generally associated with rap & pop music.
There have already been two music videos released accompanying the album, with “Ring Around The Rozay” featuring Tre Nyce being next in line (which, coincidentally, is the lone song I produced on the record). The album also features production from Crooks n Kruscher, B-Beck and the notable soundclick heavyweights Flight Academy.
You can listen to the album in it’s entirety in the soundcloud player below:

District 36 x Preme Diesel – Piano In The Dark

“Piano In The Dark”
Really vibey new track from a couple of my favorite Canadian rappers, District 36. It was a really fun track to record – they both killed it all the way through, one take. No doubles, punch-ins or any of that… just pure honest takes, which is really impressive. They produced the track, and gave me the honor of lacing some keys on the great beat they brought in. Check for these guys.

That “New Desk” Smell
I am a happy engineer right now. I just got my new Capacity Workstation desk racked up with all my favorite gear, and spent the morning patching in all the wiring. I am really happy to finally have all my gear at desktop level, both for practical and aesthetic reasons. Snapped a quick picture to share with the internets:
Special thanks to the guys at Capacity Workstations for building the desk on time and to my exact specs, and to my good friend Scott for helping me transport and assemble this beast. You guys rock.
’99 Till Infinity: My Roots In Hip Hop Production
// April 9th, 2011 // No Comments » // Blog Post
Circa 1999: Vinyl & Samplers
I got my whole start in music production & engineering making hip hop beats and recording my friends in my folk’s basement, at age 14. Under the alias Preme Diesel, it was the the vinyl, an Ensoniq ASR-10 and some relatively primitive multi-track software were what triggered my deep interest in the technological side of music. Of course, I produce all types of music and audio these days, but over the past few years I found my self with less and less time & inspiration to simply sit down on my own, return to my roots and bang out an instrumental just for the pure rush of making a beat.

My original production setup circa 2000, including Ensoniq ASR 10, Akai s900 & Acid Pro sequencing software.
Renewed Inspiration
Recently I have found renewed inspiration. Hip hop has become interesting to me again. I want to make beats. It can be understandably tough to sit down and work on your own material after working an 11 hour day as an engineer, both on your ears and psyche, but I am now making a more of an effort to make the time.
Preme Diesel Production, Today.
I have updated my instrumental portfolio with some of my newer works, mixed in with some stuff from the archives which I feel still holds its own today. You can check out some of my beats below, not only for a glimpse in to what kind of hip hop I make when left to my own devices, but to hear where I came from as a producer and engineer. If any of them strike you as something you think may be a good fit for your project, send me an email and lets make that happen.
Terell Safadi – Black Red Yellow (Official Music Video)

Terell and I were super excited to learn that the canucks would be getting behind his remix of Black and Yellow, which pays homage to the top team in the NHL. Canucks.com featured it front and center on their site, and views skyrocketed to over 100k in just a couple days. Check out the official video, directed by our friend Blake McRitchie, here below:
Sweatshop Union – The Bill Murray EP
// March 27th, 2011 // No Comments » // Uncategorized
Sweatshop Union released “The Bill Murray EP”, their 4th studio album, on March 1st 2011. I have been working with them since ’07, and had the pleasure of engineering and mixing this record. The overwhelming general consensus from critics is that this record is their best offering to date, and I would have to agree. The low track count is a clear sign that every song that made the record was carefully selected. The production, as usual, came a lot from within the group, as well as from my self, Rob The Viking and Dave Knill.

Canyon Boulevard x Michael Cassette – Little By Little

Canyon Boulevard, a side project of mine, has it’s first release in over a year coming to iTunes on Feb 15th 2011. It features a stunning remix from prog. house heavyweights Michael Cassette. I’m honored to have them a part of this release, as they are honestly one of my favorite electronic music production teams. If you’ve got a sec, check out the track previews below:
